What Kind of Counselling Do I Offer?

It has to be realistic for you. The same counselling isn't beneficial for everyone. Depending on your personality, one or more of these below might be a good fit for you. In psychotherapy terms, here are some approaches I use in counselling sessions:

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) - working to change habits of thinking and acting in the here and now

  • Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) - gaining awareness of emotions and understanding where they came from

  • Communication Skills - using new communication skills to be more assertive and more effective in relationships

  • Personal Coaching - clarifying your true values and goals and applying them to life choices

When we meet, I pay attention to what makes the most sense to you in your life situation. These counselling approaches are tools that I bring to the table for us to apply where they fit best. In practical terms, achieving better mental health might involve learning some new thinking skills and changing mental habits to keep you focused on healthy living. Or, it could mean processing trauma and childhood experiences so you can have closure on what happened back then. Sometimes counselling just provides a safe space to talk about what is happening in your life so you can organize your thoughts and plans better. I am also experienced in helping clients who want to improve skills for communicating and understanding others. Usually, people come for counselling when they feel really stuck with something about their life. They might feel anger, anxiety, panic, numbness, depression, or fear about losing something important. All that stress might be intensified by past trauma or personal challenges like ADHD or OCD. Good counselling gives you a chance to step back and clarify what is happening, then work with a supportive ally to help you recover a healthy state of mind. Counsellors are trained to pay attention to what you are experiencing and to help you apply evidence-based, solution-focused tools for living.
